Why Smaller Cows?In a culture that thinks "bigger is better" a reversion to smaller cows strikes some people as odd. However, a quick look at the farm plan will show you why they make sense. Dexters weigh 600 to 1,000 pounds as compared to American cattle that weigh 1,500 to 2,500 pounds. They eat less than half as much food, live longer, healthier lives, give birth, usually un-aided and have a temperament that makes them a pleasure to work with. By the way, the taste of their properly harvested grass-fed beef makes waiting for them to mature well worth the wait. |
Home > Our First Cow"Wits End", the Dun colored cow on the left was our first cow. We got her from our friends at HB Farms. I tried to milk her one day while she was confined, but I am afraid she won. While I got the milk I came after, I also got flopped in the face with a urine soaked tail. I consider that a small price to pay for a glass of raw milk. Still, it doesn't command too many bragging rights. On the right is "Duke", Wit's new boyfriend. Yes, she likes to rob the cradle. He came to us from our friends at Trail's End Ranch. Don't Forget the DucksThese guys were supposed to be an Easter Surprise. "They cost less than a Happy Meal" I told my wife as we brought the chirping choir in. In eight weeks we had real ducks. Now, I get duck eggs for breakfast.
