Chelsea - The Siberian Huskie
Rarely have we met a dog with Chelsea's level of intelligence. Our kids used to tease us about how we said "she talks to us" until they saw it happen. We are convinced that she was a refined lady in a previous life because of the way she selectively eats treats we offer her from our plates. Case in point; when offered a handful of mixed nuts, she will only eat the cashews and the pecans.
We have learned from her that some things cannot be unlearned.
Huskies are not that far removed from wolves. Therefore, there are instincts which no amount of training, positive or negative, will change. When it comes to our birds, Chelsea has OCD. She is obsessed with killing the chickens. She seems remorseful afterwards, but even in my presence she will attack them the first chance she gets. Given her speed, this is no idle threat. Because we value her and the birds, we have had to set boundaries, such was wire fencing, that she cannot overcome.
Update
We rarely let Chelsea roam the farm. But on certain occasions, when we would be out anyway, we would let her zoom across the open hay fields.
Late one evening, when she did not return to my call, I found her dying on the Larkin Fork bridge. She had been run over. I am convinced it was on purpose.
We took her to the emergency clinic, but the damage was too severe to save her.
